If you enter or leave Denmark with cash or other monetary instruments equal to a value of EUR 10,000 (approx. DKK 75,000) or more, you must declare the amount to the Danish Customs Agency (Toldstyrelsen).

This applies regardless of the type of currency and whether the monetary instruments are cash, bearer securities such as traveller’s cheques and cheques or certain types of gold. In this context, gold covers gold coins with a gold content of minimum 90% and gold bullion or nuggets with a gold content of minimum 99.5%.

You must also declare the monetary instruments to the Customs Agency even if you are only in transit and in Denmark for a short time, for example when travelling by car or train or if you go ashore from a ship. You are obliged to declare the monetary instruments regardless of whether you are travelling as a private individual or on company business.

If you do not declare the monetary instruments, including all the information required in the declaration form, you risk being fined and having your valuables seized.

You declare monetary instruments by filling in a declaration form and submitting it to the Customs Agency at the point where you cross the border. You can either fill in the relevant form in advance or receive a copy at the airport or at a customs office in connection with your entry or exit.

You must choose between different forms depending on whether you are carrying the monetary instruments on your way to or from an EU country or a non-EU country. Below, you can find the forms:

If you fill in the form in advance

  • Fill in the relevant form
  • Bring the form with you to the airport or to another customs office and have it stamped by the Customs Agency when you enter or leave Denmark.
  • Remember to bring the stamped form upon entry and/or exit.

As a general rule, you do not have to declare unaccompanied consignments, i.e. consignments sent with commercial carriers of goods or delivered by persons, for example by mail, freight or courier. This applies regardless of the amount.

However, the Customs Agency may require you to prepare a disclosure declaration within a time limit of 30 days if we find the monetary instruments in connection with a control of the consignment. If you fail to fill in or provide adequate information in the disclosure declaration, you may risk incurring a fine.

Please note that consignments that form part of transports of other items than goods and persons are regarded as accompanied, including money transports.

If you do not declare the monetary instruments, including all the information required in the declaration form, you risk being fined and having your valuables seized.

Please note that the Customs Agency has the right to examine and seize amounts both below and above EUR 10,000 if there are indications that the monetary instruments are connected with criminal activities.
