When you start receiving a state education grant (SU), we are notified automatically and will subsequently generate a primary tax card/secondary tax card for you. If you are entitled to a tax exemption card, please contact us on ( 45) 72 22 27 80.

If you stop receiving the state education grant, or if you work while receiving the grant, you should change your preliminary income assessment.

If you work while receiving a state education grant you need to:

  1. Ask your employer to use your secondary tax card. Your primary tax card is used for your education grant.
  2. Log on to E-tax (TastSelv) to change your preliminary income assessment. Enter the amount you expect to receive this year in field 201.

You are responsible for making sure you pay tax and labour market contributions (AM-bidrag) on your B-income. You receive B-income when you work as a freelancer or consultant, or if you get a fee for a concert performance or presentation, among other things.

Any expenses for materials, etc., you had in connection with earning the fee are tax-deductible.

Calculate your pay

Your withholding rate and monthly deductions and allowances determine how much you receive after tax. You find the information at the top of your preliminary income assessment.

Use your figures to calculate your income after tax.

You need to log on and change your preliminary income assessment when your education grant ends.

  1. If you started working, you must enter the amount you expect to earn for the rest of the year in field 201.
  2. If you receive unemployment, sickness or parental leave benefits (dagpenge), you need to enter the amount you expect to receive for the rest of the year in field 304.
  3. If you receive cash benefits (kontanthjælp), you need to enter the amount you expect to receive for the rest of the year in field 216.

If you go abroad to study for a shorter or longer period of time, your education grant will in most cases be taxed as if you were studying in Denmark.

This applies, for example, if you will be studying in other EU countries or in the United States.

You automatically obtain a deduction for the interest charged on your student loan once you start repaying your loan. This appears from your tax assessment notice.

If you want interest to be deducted on a continuous basis during the year, you need to log on to enter the amount in field 485 of your preliminary income assessment.
