The new owner of the vehicle needs to re-register or deregister the vehicle within three weeks from the time of purchase. Otherwise, the seller can ask the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen) to deregister the vehicle.

You can re-register your new vehicle in three ways:

Re-register a vehicle in the Register of Motor Vehicles

When you have sold a vehicle, the new owner has three weeks to re-register (change of ownership/user) or deregister the vehicle. Until the vehicle has been re-registered, you, as the seller, pay taxes and third party liability insurance on the vehicle.

Check for deregistration

  1. Log on to E-tax (TastSelv) using NemID.
  2. Select ‘Motor' (Motor) and ‘Motorregistret' (Register of Motor Vehicles).
  3. Select ‘Administration' (Administration) and then ‘Vis borger/virksomhedsoplysninger' (Show information on individual or business).
  4. You can see your 'Aktuelle' (Current) and ‘Historiske' (Previous) vehicles. Once a vehicle has been deregistered or you are no longer the owner, it appears under ‘Historiske' (Previous)

The buyer has not re-registered or deregistered the vehicle

If the buyer has not re-registered (change of ownership/user) or deregistered the vehicle within three weeks from the time of purchase, you can ask the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen) to deregister the vehicle by visiting one of our vehicle registration offices or contacting us by email.

Contacting SKAT by email

  1. Log on to E-tax (TastSelv)
  2. Select 'Kontakt' (Contact) and then 'Skriv til us (Write to us)
  3. Select 'Bil og motor' (Vehicles),' Registrering og nummerplader' (Registration and number plates) and then 'Afmeld køretøj' (Deregister vehicle).
  4. Write your message in the field.
  5. Attach a bill of sale.
  6. Click 'Send' (Send).

A bill of sale must state the following:

  • Date of sale
  • Name of seller
  • Name and address of buyer
  • Possible date of birth of buyer (optional)
  • Possible number of driver's license (optional)
  • Signatures of seller and buyer
