What you need to do depends on whether you have lost one or both number plates.

Log on to the Danish Register of Motor Vehicles

If your number plates have been stolen, damaged or confiscated by the police, but not deregistered, you need to deregister the plates by declaring them lost in the Register of Motor Vehicles.

If your number plates have been stolen, you need to report this to the police before you can log on to the Register of Motor Vehicles to state that the plates have been lost.

  1. Log on to E-tax (TastSelv) using NemID
  2. Select ‘Motor' (Motor) and ‘Motorregistret' (Registry of Motor Vehicles)
  3. Select ‘Plader' (Number plates) and ‘Erklær nummerplader bortkommet' (Declare number plates lost)
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen
  5. The number plates will be deregistered
  6. You can buy new number plates from a number plate provider (in Danish only but enter your postal code to find the one nearest to you) or from one of our vehicle registration offices.

Only the primary owner of a vehicle, can declare the number plates lost.

No access to the register of motor vehicles

If you do not have NemID or if you are unable to access the Register of Motor Vehicles, you can send your statement of lost number plates to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen).

First, you need to inform the police that the number plates have been stolen. Then the primary owner of the vehicle can deregister the vehicle by sending a statement to us.

  1. Complete Statement of lost number plates (Form 21.064 - in Danish only)
  2. Submit the form via E-tax (TastSelv)
  3. Select ‘Kontakt' (Contact) and then 'Skriv til os' (Write to us).
  4. Under ‘Emne' (Subject) you select ‘Køretøjer, registrering og nummerplader' (Vehicles, registration and number plates).
  5. Select 'Bil og motor' (Vehicles) and then 'Registrering/nummerplade' (Registration/number plate) and then 'Stjålne og bortkomne nummerplader' (Stolen and lost number plates)
  6. Attach the form and click 'Send' (Send).

We deregister your number plates within five days from receiving your request. If you want to deregister the vehicle at the same time, please call us on (+45) 72 22 18 18 when you have sent your email.

Once your number plates have been deregistered it will appear from the Register of Motor Vehicles under ‘Administration - Vis borger/Virksomhedsoplysninger- Historiske køretøjer' (Administration - Show information on individual/business - Previous vehicles).

If you have lost or damaged one of your number plates, you can either order a replacement or deregister the vehicle.

There are two to ways to replace your number plate:

  • Replacement of number plate: You order a replacement number plate if one of your number plates has been stolen or lost. You decide if you want to collect the number plate from one of our vehicle registration offices, or if you want us to send it to you at a DKK 38 delivery charge.
  • Change of number plate: You order a change of number plate if one of your number plates has been damaged. You need to collect the new number plate in one of our vehicle registration offices as the damaged number plates must be returned to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency (Motorstyrelsen) before we hand over the new number plate.

Both types of number plates cost DKK 590 + a DKK 200 handling fee payable to the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency. Please note that the fee charged by number plate providers may vary. Time of delivery is approximately 4 weeks.

Ordering a replacement number plate

You can order a replacement number plate in the Register of Motor Vehicles or in one of our vehicle registration offices. If you have vintage number plates, however, you need to order a replacement with one of our vehicle registration offices.

Please note that if you lose a number plate for the second time in two years, you should deregister the number plates and buy a new set.

This is how you do it:

  1. Log on to E-tax (TastSelv) using NemID and select 'Motor - Motorregistret' (Motor - Registry of Motor Vehicles).
  2. Select ‘Plader, Bestil specialplader og Bestil erstatningsnummer' (Number plates, Order special number plates and Order replacement number plate.
  3. State the control figure (kontroltal or kodedel 1 or 2 in Danish) stated on your registration certificate.
  4. Complete your order. You cannot cancel your order once you have paid, as the replacement number plate is custom-made.
  5. The primary owner of the vehicle can follow the order under ‘Vis status på pladebestillinger' (Show order status). The status will be changed once the number plate has been dispatched, and from that day it may take up to ten working days before the owner receives the number plate.

Deregister the vehicle

Please complete form 21.064: Statement of lost number plates  (in Danish) and send it to one of our vehicle registration offices along with the number plate, if you want to deregister your vehicle.

If your number plates have been stolen, you need to report it to the police first. Next, you have two options:

  1. You can declare the number plates lost in the Register of Motor Vehicles and buy new number plates from a number plate provider. If your vehicle is more than five years old, it may have to pass an inspection first. You need to buy temporary stickers in order to drive your vehicle without number plates to an inspection centre.
  2. Go to one of our vehicle registration offices to deregister the number plates and buy new ones. You have to deregister and buy new ones at the same time, if you do not want your vehicle to be inspected.

The primary user of the vehicle will receive the number plate in the course of four weeks. Your receipt from the register of motor vehicles is you permit to drive your vehicle with only one number plate. You need to keep this receipt in your vehicle when you are driving. The number plate you still have must be fitted at the rear of the vehicle.

Under special circumstances we may decide to refund the payment for your replacement number plate. The following conditions must be met for this to be an option:

  • You contact us within seven days from receiving the number plate.
  • You have not yet received/unpacked the replacement number plate.
  • We need to receive the number plate: by either courier, personal appearance or regular post (expenses for return freight are not refunded).

If the number plate has been delivered to the motor registry office

If you have ordered your replacement number plate for delivery at a vehicle registration office, you need to contact usvia E-tax (TastSelv). Please state that your lost number plate has been returned to you and that you would like to be refunded.

  1. Log on to E-tax (TastSelv)´.
  2. Select ‘Kontant' (Contact) and then 'Skriv til os' (Write to us).
  3. Select ‘Bil og motor' (Vehicles) and then 'Registrering/nummerplader' (Registration/number plated) and then 'Nummerplader og ejerskifte' (Number plates and change of ownership).

If the number plate is delivered to you

If you have ordered the number plate and requested that it is sent to your home, you need to deliver the replacement number plate to one of our vehicle registration offices, either in person or by post.

If you send it by post, you need to enclose a note stating that your lost number plate has been returned and that you would like to be refunded.
